The European Commission sends out warnings

The EU’s Waste Framework Directive lays down legal obligations on the management of municipal waste. These include a target of 50% preparation for re-use and recycling for municipal waste until 2020.

In September, the European Commission (EC) published a review about EU member states that are at risk of missing the 2020 target. A total of 14 countries were given an early warning but also possible country-specific actions to improve their waste management and ensure compliance with EU waste legislation.

These actions include more effective separate collection to ensure high quality recycling, efficient extended producer responsibility schemes, economic instruments such as landfill and incineration taxes, and improved data quality. In line with the 2018 Circular Economy Package, the potential of remanufacturing and of turning the EU into a recycling society is actively promoted.
